Bob Schmitt Homes' 'Green' Insulation

News on building ‘green’ is sweeping the nation. While this new movement is here to stay, few are aware of the lasting benefits. The number one incentive for building ‘green’ is the effect it has on lowering your energy bills. Home energy efficiency is a rather large element in ensuring your electrical bills are not soaring with today’s rising prices. Proper insulation is the key to keeping your home energy efficient. Dow Building Solutions states, “Wood accounts for at least 25% of the home’s walls and is a poor insulator. Wood studs create a thermal bridge that heat can pass through. Thermal bridging through studs accounts for up to 17% of energy loss in a home.”

According to Dow Building Solutions, “existing and new homes are often poorly insulated”, this leaves the owners with rising energy bills. However, 1” R-5 insulated sheathing improves wall insulation by 40%. The 1” R-5 insulated sheathing can also reduce the opportunity for moisture within the wall that can lead to mold and mildew. Bob Schmitt Homes has and will continue to use this form of insulation to help our existing and future homeowners lower their overall energy costs.

Building green does not always equal lower energy costs. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports, “Residential gas consumption has decreased by close to 35% since 1985, which has reduced the delivery fees that the gas companies receive. To make up for this loss in income, local gas companies are submitting price increase to the PUCO.” Overall this is a rather large insult to ‘green’ homes as those who are attempting to conserve energy may see a bigger increase in their gas bill.
